My parernts use a lot of water (All day all night)?

Okay so it gets really hot out. We have this garden with all these fruit and veggies, my dad waters it with a sprinkler type thing attached to a hose ALL DAY. it running all day and might be stopped for like an 30 minutes. and night he uses the sprinkler to water the lawn. It’s terrible and I told my and she\s like "The plants will die out" and i told they dont need to be watered all day but she disagrees. if I shut the water off my parents will scream and beat me up literally.

here is the water usage thing for the city

"From June 1 to September 30 sprinkling of lawns at times other than those listed below is prohibited. These measures are being taken to conserve our water resource so adequate amounts of water are available for all purposes. Any complaints received, or observed violations, may result in fines imposed under Surrey By-law No. 12508.

When you may sprinkle your lawn:

DAYS:

EVEN numbered addresses may sprinkle on Wednesdays and Saturdays

ODD numbered addresses may sprinkle on Thursdays and Sundays

TIME: (on permitted days)

4:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Most lawns only need about 2.5 centimeters of water per week (depth of a tuna can). This amount can easily be applied by sprinkling once a week.

……..

. "Watering of flowers, shrubs, trees and vegetable gardens is not affected by the regulations during this stage of the restrictions. To conserve water, consider using a watering can or a hose with a spring loaded or other automatic shut-off nozzle, and water in the morning."

What can i do?

I can’t believe these answers! They’re your parents and in my opinion if you were to report them thats just making them face fines and whatever else because you didnt like it.

If the state catches them thats one thing, but to report the people that have cared for you and raised you is WRONG!

Call and report your parents….. then they might get smart and decide to shut off the water if not they can continue to pay fines….

  • in vino veritas:

    Report them.

Sounds like your parents are rather selfish. Most plants can adapt to low water, doing this when they are young is called hardening off.

Towns that are suffering low water levels due to drought can and often do ration water, by turning it off completely. You need to tell your parents that wasting water like that can get them a hefty fine, as well as having their water rationed.

They do NOT need to be watered all day, as a matter of fact, too much water can encourage shallow roots, and this can be deadly to a plant if they miss a watering or an early frost comes. Shallow roots encourage spindly plants and low yields.

I imagine your parents will be done brown if the city is forced to shut their water off due to overuse. This is quite possible.

You could call your town’s bylaw enforcement if they water after the posted times, maybe a hefty fine will wake them up.

You could report them… at the same time though I am suprised they haven’t had to take out a second mortgage for the water bill.

I know neighbors get upset at water hoggers and report people.

Have you suggested showering with a bucket in the tub and using that water.

same can be done with bath water, (i used to do that, but my bucket kept disappering so I gave up)

    dish water can be used.

days that you know it’s going to rain you can set out buckets and use the rain water.

    good luck
